The day following our hike with Juniper Ridge, we joined Hall, Obi, and Matt once again. This evening, we gathered at the newly opened Danner store for a live fragrance distillation. Rain confined us to a small alley where puffs of wilderness filled my lungs, vertiginous currents swirling from the copper pipes of the whiskey still.
Deeply inhale. Deeply exhale.
"A hundred years ago, all perfumes were made this way. Today we’re the only ones who handle every step of the process ourselves, from beginning to end. We distill colognes and perfumes from real plants, bark, moss, mushrooms, and tree trimmings found hiking the backcountry. We make our fragrances throughout the West Coast—on dirt roads and trails, around campfires, and in our Oakland, California workshop. All to capture the quiet beauty of the Mojave Desert at sunrise, or a late-season Sierra trailhead with winter right around the corner."
Traversing through desert and mountain; simultaneously foreign and familiar. This necessary daily embark into nature. Scent has the power to do that, to transport you there. I've fallen in love with the Inyo backcountry and with the Timberline Trail of Oregon's Mt. Hood, though they are some thousand miles away. Every day I carry it with me, this Caruthers Canyon in a bottle. Splashing it on, every nerve in my body excites with notes of Desert Pine sap, sagebrush, and Desert Cedar.
On October 17, Juniper Ridge will add two new fragrances, Yuba River and Big Sur, to their line of Backpacker Colognes. "Together, the four Backpacker’s Colognes serve as an aromatic map of the West’s most revered places. Fragrances include the California coast’s Big Sur ($100 retail), the Sierra Nevada’s Yuba River ($100 retail), the Mojave Desert’s Caruthers Canyon ($122 retail), and Pacific Northwest’s Siskiyou ($100 retail). 'Our Backpacker’s Colognes are the best encapsulation of what we do,' says Newbegin. 'They’re made entirely with real stuff from the real places, and we’re so excited that folks are finally going to have a chance to experience them'."
This aromatic love song Juniper Ridge has written to nature, is the sort of tool John Muir could have used when crusading for wilderness preservation. They bring the mountains to you! Appealing olfactories would have made even the most resistant of men a lover of the great wild. But, we aren't finished yet! There are still more parks to be made and work to be done. 10% of all Juniper Ridge profits go to Wilderness groups like the Ventana Wilderness Alliance and the Klamath-Siskiyou Wildlands Center. In 2012, $20,000 was donated in an effort to keep the West Coast wild.
